New waiting room at Exeter opens with heritage displays

First Great Western has completed work on new and much improved customer waiting facilities at Exeter St Davids station.

The new facility on platform 5/6 was officially opened on 19 February, and offers far more comfortable and secure facilities for train travellers at the busy station.

The major conversion project has seen interior remodelling of the existing buildings on platforms 5 and 6. Creating a new waiting lounge with extra seating space, comfortable chairs, new disabled toilets and snack vending, will ensure a modern and comfortable waiting area for passengers at the station. High level seats offer a good work space with power points for lap tops with the entire building wi-fi connected.

Kevin Ogilvie–White, Station Manager for Exeter and Mid Devon, said: “This work at Exeter St Davids station has significantly enhance our provision for customers on our busiest platforms. Customers will have more
space, greater comfort and much improved facilities, which include computer access and a dedicated customer service point for help and information.”

On the walls are a series of specially designed posters reflecting traction types seen on the former British Railways Western Region and FGW, including a 'King', 'Western', HST, Blue Pullman and an outline drawing of the future in the shape of High Speed Trains 2.

This is an excellent rebuilding of an existing structure and top marks should be given to FGW.

Posters displaying the past history of the Western Region and the planned future of FGW are fitted to the walls of the new waiting room, a very nice addition considering the number of railway enthusiasts who visit this major station. CJM
