Freightliner launches new Southampton-Doncaster service - (well actually last January)

In January, Freightliner Southampton grew its daily service provision from 15 to 17. To cope with increasing demand from the North West, Freightliner now offers a further daily service to their Terminal at Manchester Trafford Park.

The company has also added a new destination, Doncaster, to its portfolio with the provision of a daily return service.

The Doncaster Rail Terminal, situated by Junction 2 of the M18, is ideally placed to serve not only the Doncaster area, but further afield into Humberside, Lincolnshire, Nottingham and Derbyshire. Having commenced on Monday 22 January (but only announced officially by the company on 14 March), the company’s total service offering has now risen to 94.These newest additions reflect increasing demand for Freightliner’s services in Southampton.

Peter Maybury, Managing Director, Freightliner Ltd, commented: “It is easy to launch services during the autumn peak; we ourselves run weekend specials to help service this demand. Nonetheless, we are delighted that our ability to launch new services in what is traditionally a lull for the deep sea market has been met with such enthusiasm from our customers. Already a number of the wagons are contracted out on a daily basis, but we have scope left for the more speculative buyer. We see our role as an integral part of the port’s plans for expansion and growth. Freightliner’s method of operation with SCT is unique because we utilise the Sprinter feed system – a joint investment by the two parties. This ensures that we maximise off peak SCT resource and keep valuable road booking slots available to service trucks in the port. Of all the operators running Intermodal services from the port, Freightliner has the best utilization rate. As a result, by carrying more boxes per train, Freightliner also leaves a smaller carbon footprint.”
