Virgin record best performance in National Rail Trends Report

Virgin CrossCountry and West Coast have recorded the best public performance measure Moving Annual Average levels in their entire history according to statistics published on 29 March 2007 in the Office of Rail Regulation's National Rail Trends 2006 - 2007 Q3 report. Virgin CrossCountry's MAA of 84.3 percent and Virgin West Coast's MAA of 87.2 percent at 31 December 2006 are their best ever as the company celebrates its tenth birthday. Virgin CrossCountry's percentage of trains arriving on time was 80.5 percent during Quarter Three, 2006/2007 compared to 72.7 percent in the same quarter of 2005/6. Performance on Virgin West Coast improved from 81.0 percent to 84.4 percent during the same period, putting both franchises high in the league table of long distance operators. Virgin Trains has led Britain's charge in becoming the fastest growing railway in Europe. Virgin CrossCountry and Virgin West Coast have seen some of the biggest increases in passenger numbers with new trains, faster and more frequent services and innovative ticketing all attracting millions more passengers. Virgin CrossCountry has seen massive growth of 75 percent since 1997, with passenger numbers up from 12 million to more than 21 million, while on Virgin West Coast passenger numbers are up 39 percent from 14 million to more than 20.5 million. In the last 12 months more than 42 million journeys have been made with Virgin Trains - 16 million more than when the company began in 1997. Virgin CrossCountry Managing Director Chris Gibb said: "With unprecedented passenger growth levels which show every sign of continuing, we are pleased to be able to demonstrate significant performance improvement which is running hand in hand. "We are determined to maintain and improve further on these trends during the currency of the New Cross Country franchise for which we have bid." Virgin West Coast Managing Director Charles Belcher said: "Our heartening performance is testimony to the combined benefits of new trains and infrastructure which have allowed us to produce a timetable so popular with customers." |
