Platform and station upgrade at Cheshunt

Broxbourne MP Charles Walker declared a new-look Cheshunt station ‘open’ on 6 November 2006, when he unveiled a plaque to the project undertaken by National Express as part of its new franchise commitment between ‘one’ and the Department for Transport. The bay platform at the Hertfordshire station had been only able to take a four-car EMU as it was originally constructed for a six-coach train length. This can now accommodate eight cars, allowing twice the seats for peak services. In addition to the platform extension, a new ticket office has been provided containing new ticket machines and information screens, a new footbridge is in place, a new toilet accommodating the disabled, a new covered area for parking cycles and new heated self-enclosed waiting areas on both platforms with CCTV coverage. The total cost of the work was £4 million.

In the lengthened bay platform on 6 November, with the new footbridge to the rear, Class 315 EMU No 315827 awaits departure as the 10.31 service to London Liverpool Street. Brian Morrison
