Southampton Central improvements

A major redesign project to improve the image and visibility of one of Southampton’s key gateways, Southampton Central Railway Station, has now been successfully completed. This marks the first phase of Southampton City Council’s Gateways and Approaches initiative which is looking at the visitor experience and image of the city.

The pedestrian concourse leading to the Northern entrance has been widened and a new feature canopy installed along with new paving which greatly improves the entrance’s visual appearance making it more welcoming and safer for visitors. In addition new lighting and banners signpost the approach to the station and newly designed lampposts provide visitors with clear directions to the city centre and the station. This new signage will compliment other city council projects which are looking at a complete range of maps & signs across the city centre which will improve access and help the flow of pedestrians through the city.

Stewart Palmer, South West Trains’ Managing Director, said: “I am delighted with the work we have been able to achieve through our partnerships with Southampton City Council and Network Rail. I am glad that local stations have been recognised as a worthwhile investment and I am keen to continue working with partners to improve the conditions and facilities at stations across the network.”
