FM Rail announces new Automotive flow

FM Rail the one of the leading independent train operator has added the movement of prestigious motorcars to its recently launched thrice weekly Intermodal freight flow between Birmingham and Glasgow.

A variety of top of the range vehicles (Mercedes, BMWs, Jaguars and 4x4s) are transported from Long Marston in Warwickshire for auction in Scotland. The return flow south sees off-lease motorcars returned from Scotland to Long Marston.

The new flow uses secure Mk1 General Utility Vans (GUVs) with 90mph capability (leased from HSBC Rail) which were designed for Motorail traffic along the Great Western Main Line. Cars are loaded at Long Marston and then tripped to Hams Hall for inclusion in FM Rail’s regular weekly Hams Hall – Mossend service.

The Hams Hall – Mossend service which was launched on 1 November already carries a range of commodities including thermalite blocks, white and perishable goods.

Andy Cox, Freight Development Manager for FM Rail said “The addition of motor traffic to our thrice weekly intermodal flow shows that there is a significant volume of new traffic waiting to be won to the railway. Our ability to capture this new traffic within weeks of starting a regular intermodal flow shows that FM Rail has already become a significant force in the UK railfreight market.”

The regular Intermodal service between Hams Hall and Mossend is being marketed under the “VFM Railfreight” brand in conjunction with Victa Railfreight Limited.

Initially the service operates three days a week between Hams Hall and Mossend and as well as transporting GUVs also carries unitised cargo in ISO Containers or Swap Bodies. Future expansion plans will see the service extended to North Thameside (London) in 2007.
