Sir John Betjeman honoured by 'one' Railway

National Express Group operator 'one' Railway marked what would have been Sir John Betjeman's 100th birthday, by naming Class 90 No. 90007 in his honour at London Livepool Street station on 8 September 2006.

The loco in immaculate condition worked light from Norwich Crown Point to London for the event, which was hosted by David Franks, Chief Executive, Trains Division, National Express Group and Dominic Booth, Managing Director of 'one'. After a welcome to a number of invited guests, Sir John Betjeman's daughter Candida Lycett Green and his son Paul Betjeman were invited to unveil the cast plate.

'one' Railway found it appropriate to apply Betjeman's name to a Class 90, as Liverpool Street was one of the many railway stations he fought to preserve in the 1960s, and of course one of his most famous poems 'A Mind's Journey to Diss' is a station served by the operator.

After the unveiling No. 90007 returned light to Norwich Crown Point depot.
