Campaign to save Frinton 'Gates'

The residents of Frinton-on-Sea are campaigning to save the town's famous level crossing gates from being replaced by automatic barriers in the forthcoming modernisation scheme.
The 'Frinton Gates' have been long known as the gateway to the exclusive Essex resort, renowned for its tree lined avenues, wealthy retired residents, and quaint by-laws, which until recently prevented the opening of pubs or fish and chip shops within 'The Gates'.
Currently, Frinton level crossing is contolled by a ground frame, contained in a cabin between the crossing and station. There are also two semaphore signals protecting the level crossing.
The resignalling of the Frinton and Clacton lines from December 2006 would see all these functions controlled from Colchester power box. (John Podgorski)
