On 18 September 2007, The Minister of State for Transport, Rt. Hon. Rosie Winterton MP, officially opened Coleshill Parkway station at a ceremony attended by many local dignitaries, people and businesses. Coleshill Parkway reconnects this area of North Warwickshire to the rail network for the first time since the original station on the site, which first opened exactly 175 years ago, was closed in 1968.
Coleshill Parkway is one of a number of important new stations to be opened in the UK in the last 10 years and is an important transport hub for people and businesses in the North Warwickshire area.
The station is an integrated rail and bus interchange with secure, inexpensive parking for 200 cars. It will be served by regular trains (up to two an hour in each direction) on the Central Trains Birmingham-Stansted Airport line, putting Central Birmingham, Nuneaton, Leicester, Peterborough, Cambridge and Stansted Airport within easy reach of local residents and businesses. It also offers an alternative, quick and easy route to the NEC and Birmingham International for people traveling from the east of the country – only 17 minutes by bus.
The result of an £8.35 million investment by John Laing and Warwickshire County Council, which received significant contributions from North Warwickshire Borough Council and the Department for Transport, Coleshill Parkway will make it easier for local residents, workers and commuters, especially those who use the heavily congested M42, to park the car and take the train.
Staffed from the first to the last train of the day, with security staff on duty outside these hours, good lighting, regular connections and over 40 CCTV cameras, the station offers a safe environment. The combination of staff, simple to use ticket machines, plentiful on-site parking and bus stops outside the main entrance also make it very easy and convenient to use.
Rt. Hon. Rosie Winterton MP, Minister of State for Transport, said "Coleshill Parkway is great example of how the Government's investment in transport is delivering real improvements on the ground. Better local transport is crucial to cutting congestion and boosting the local economy.”
Andy Pearson, Director of Rail Infrastructure for John Laing Projects & Developments commented: “Coleshill Parkway has been designed to make travelling quicker and easier, as well as better for the environment. And we hope that putting a station back into Coleshill will have positive economic benefits for the whole area.”
Councillor Martin Heatley at Warwickshire City Council’s Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, added: “We welcome working in partnership with John Laing to deliver this new scheme that is of great benefit to everyone in North Warwickshire and the local economy. Together with the team at John Laing, we thought about every aspect of passengers’ journeys in order to make Coleshill Parkway as easy to use and enjoyable as possible.”
Richard Bowker, Chief Executive of National Express Group said: “This is not only of great benefit to the local community in North Warwickshire, it is also a boost to the wider Midlands; designed to make travel quicker and easier. I hope that more and more people will make use of the facility”.
